The reality in the U.S. today is that public schools are failing our children in more ways than one. There are almost 100,000 public schools in the US, serving 9 out of 10 children in the United States. But the federal government has neglected them—and localities fund them through extremely unequal property taxes. Students, teachers, and families in Black and Brown communities disproportionately have to deal with unhealthy and underfunded schools. Racial justice means giving our schools the public and national investment they deserve. It’s time to stop treating public schools like something to be ashamed of, and start investing in them like the foundation of our families’ futures.
We are the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and we’re fighting for a Green New Deal for Public Schools as part of our national Green New Deal campaign, established at the 2019 DSA Convention with the larger goal of winning an ecosocialist Green New Deal. For more background, see here.
Together, we will keep building the momentum we need for a mass movement powerful enough to grind the oil wells to a halt and build a decommodified, democratic economy of abundance and care for all. Join DSA to continue this work with us.
